[US] Scam call telling someone I’m in the hospital after DUI? Very sketchy.

I’m gonna preface this by saying I googled and searched this subreddit and couldn’t find anything similar to this phone call.

Last night my manager calls me from work in a panic. She’s making sure I’m okay because she got a call from the [County of residence] sheriff’s department asking for her specifically, (saying « is this the general manager of [place of work]? ») and that one of her coworkers is in police custody at the hospital after a car accident involving a child. They continued to add more details like this employee was on cough syrup and had gotten into a fight with their partner, hence why they called the manager (also mentioning the employee said they were friends with manager outside of work).

They gave a vague description of the employee (hair color and length, height, tattoos and piercings, etc.) Manager gives them two false names first, and then in a panic names me. I’m the only one at our job that fits the description of the person they claimed to have. They said it was me and that I’d be at the [county] sheriff’s office once they cleared me at the hospital.

She asks if they need her phone number (it was the phone at work), they decline, they don’t ask for any money or anything. They even sent her to an automated voice call like « thank you for calling [county] county sheriff’s department. Press 1 for booking, press 2 for the main office, etc. » They told her that once I was booked id post bail, and then she would have to come get me, giving her an address (she did not specify if the address was the local sheriff’s department or not) they didn’t ask for her personal information, no money, anything.

She said it was very real sounding and she was very panicked when she called me….I was sitting on the couch with my alleged partner I have « gotten into a fight with » so that thankfully eased her mind.

I’m posting this here though because I found it very strange they didn’t ask for any scamy information. It was more like a prank call than anything. What does anyone gain from that? How did they know such an accurate (vauge but accurate) description of me? Idk it freaked me out that they used me, even down to being off work yesterday. I wanted someone else’s thoughts on this since I couldn’t find anything like this on here. Police scams yes, but nothing of this caliber from anything I read. I just want to be reassured no one is out to get me for some reason 😅😭
