I didn’t fall for the scam, but I’m unsure what the scam is.
I received a call from a restricted number asking for me. I live in a small, rural area in the US, and live in the county seat. Because of the small-town area and the nature of my job as a mental health professional, I am familiar with both city and county law enforcement officers. If I haven’t actually worked with them, I at least know their names.
The caller identified themselves as a sergeant in the county sheriff’s office and stated I missed a court date last week, resulting in 2 misdemeanors. I immediately knew this was a scam because the caller had an accent unlike anyone around here, the name he gave himself wasn’t familiar to me, and I knew I hadn’t missed any court dates.
He stated I was due in court last week to provide expert mental health testimony, and because I hadn’t appeared, « the judge is looking for an explanation from you. » I asked, « And who is the judge in this case? » (because I also know who the judges are in our courthouse), and he immediately hung up on me.
What would the scam be? I let the call go on because I was curious where this could be going, but then I got hung up on lol. I just don’t want this to happen to anyone else. Clearly the scammer found my name and occupation through LinkedIn or another professional website .. but why?
