A few weeks ago I applied to a position on Upwork and the company was verified and approved according to them and then I get an email asking me for an interview. The company was a legit one and all the names checked out to people I found on LinkedIn (I am guessing they were impersonating them) so I didn’t think much of the entire interview being over Microsoft Teams chat. I even filled out a questionnaire to them with my resume and everything felt, although odd, legit and I have worked with remote companies before where I have never met with my employers in person so I didn’t think much of the only chat communication.
Anyways, I sign the offer letter and that’s when they ask me if I have a laptop, printer, etc and all these materials. They tell me that they will send it over to me and email me a check to print out to deposit and provide the delivery vendor with the cash. Because in my mind they are the legit company from LinkedIn, I don’t think much of it and I deposit the check and send them the confirmation screenshot (like an idiot). It’s only when they start pressuring me to send them money bc the delivery needs to happen « ASAP » that I realize it’s a scam. Obviously did not send them any money and have blocked everyone (& rejected the offer). Then, I get an email from UpWork saying that they were impersonating the company and have been removed for spam.
I’m a bit stressed because they have things like my address, the last 4 digits of my checking account, my signature (which was on my offer letter) and am worried that I am about to fall victim to identity theft now. I’m planning to go to my bank and see if I can close my account and open a new one with them but are there any other steps I should take? Just very embarassed to have fallen for this.
