Hello everyone,
I am not sure there is anything that anyone can do in this situation but I still have hope she will listen eventually. My [34F] mom [63] believes she has been talking to Sam Ryder since 2021. It’s the same as all the stories I read on here. She had commented on his official account on insta and a different account messaged her saying it was him and he needs to be secretive about talking to her but he loves her art (she’s a talented painter).
This scammer eventually got her to « invest » in this fake crypto site and first « the site crashed » and they « had to pay lawyers to get out the 500,000 the investment made ». Then he’s « stuck in a contract with shady people » and « needs to pay them off ». Every month it’s a new story and excuse. At first I wasn’t very strongly telling her it was a scam because, even though it didn’t sound right, I’m poor, I know nothing about investing, and I have always trusted my mom’s judgement before all this. By the time I started saying it was a scam loudly, she’s was so deep in it she can’t see from the outside. I think because it’s gone on so long and because she is a big fan of the irl celebrity she just won’t admit to herself it has all been a scam.
A year and a half ago she told me she was done but I just heard this week she is still talking to the scammer. The bank told her it was a scam, all her friends and family are telling her it’s a scam. She’s an accountant! Like she should know this stuff. The absolute worst part is that she went to a meet and greet to meet the real Sam Ryder and he obviously didn’t know her. But the scammer convinced her after that he has to be secretive and he « pretended he didn’t know her » to keep his secrets safe.
I cry and loose sleep about this way too often. I’m an only child and I just feel like this isn’t going to get dealt with until it’s my responsibility. I’m trying to have hope instead. Anyone else in similar situations?
