[Canada] Indeed Scam – Lost over $10,000

Recently I’ve been applying for a few jobs on indeed – I get a message on Indeed from a job I applied for from what from my search seems to a genuine company near my city.

The message asks me to install an app and setup an interview. I was quite interested in the position so I installed the app and input some non threatening information to sign up, but the app would not work, just a blank screen.

I was heading out at the time so I decided to leave it for the next day to try get the app working and setup an interview.

The next day I notice the app has disappeared – Google identified it as a harmful app and removed it for me. I think nothing of it and look into it further and decide the job was lost, if they can’t setup a simple interview it wouldn’t be worth it.

A few days later I notice over $10,000 missing from my account. I immediately try to ring my bank but it was a national holiday so I have to wait until the next day.

The next day I get through to the fraud department who inform me someone has been using my device to transfer money. They were pretty unsympathetic and tell me the money is lost but their team will look into it.

I feel so embarrassed and hopeless. I am usually so careful with money and scams. It all seems so obvious now that I know the app was used to remotely control my phone and somehow they managed to access my banking app and take money.

I’m unsure if I should contact the police about this? It seems somewhat hopeless to me at this point.

I just needed to vent about it somewhere
