[US] What was the end goal?

At 12:30am this morning, I received a call from my mom’s cell phone. I heard what was very clearly my mom’s voice in the background, very much in distress and screaming for help. A man started speaking to me and said “your mom is in trouble and she needs help” I immediately panic and start to lose it “what are you talking about? Who is this? Why do you have my mom’s phone” and he calmly said “listen to me. She needs help right now but what you’re not going to do is call the police otherwise I’m going to blow this place up.”

I hung up the phone in hysterics, woke my husband up and I get a call back from my mom’s phone. My husband picks it up, mutes our voices and listens to again, what is clearly my mom’s voice in a struggle. I hang up and immediately called her local police department.

After 30 minutes on the phone with the local PD, they finally make contact with my parents – all is well. They were sound asleep when I received these calls. Clearly I was spoofed, but what the heck was the end game here? And how did he get my mom’s voice? Was this the work of AI? Was he going to ask for money but I just didn’t stay on the phone long enough to get to that part? I’m so confused and still nauseated from this whole experience.

Has anyone had anything similar happen to them?
