Hey folks,
I’m currently pursuing an MSc in Health Informatics and Analytics, and it includes coursework in Machine Learning and Generative AI. I also have a Bachelor’s in Pharmacy (BPharm), so my academic background is mostly in healthcare.
But I’ve been really passionate about AI, and over time I’ve built a solid portfolio of hands-on projects:
Brain MRI tumor segmentation Disease prediction using satellite/environmental data A few UI/UX projects / full-stack web apps (frontend strong, backend okay-ish)
Here’s my portfolio if anyone wants to check it out: Portfolio. Please use desktop as it is not optimised for mobile yet.
I’ve completed Andrew Ng’s ML and Deep Learning specializations and NLP + advancing into LLMs. Ultimately, I want to become a Generative AI Engineer — build cool, meaningful stuff at the intersection of health + AI.
But honestly, I keep seeing posts saying unless you have a CS or AIML degree, you can’t break into AI roles, especially as a fresher. It’s a bit discouraging.
So I wanted to ask:
Has anyone made it into AI/GenAI roles without a CS/AIML degree?
How much does the degree actually matter today if you have solid projects and skills?
Any advice on improving my chances or things I should focus on next?
Would really appreciate any input. Thanks in advance!
P.S. I used ChatGPT to help word this better just wanted to be clear and not ramble
