Is this a parking lot scam?

Just finished IKEA trip and there was a male in a Milani plumbing van in the parking lot (few parking spots away from where I parked) who came running towards me and asked if I could help park their van. His van was stuck in the middle and said he needed help getting into the parking spot. He said it is his first time driving and needed help.

I took a look around the vehicle and it had plenty of space if he just backed up a bit before pulling forward into the spot. I felt uncomfortable driving another persons vehicle so I offered to look out for him as he parked. He quickly said it was ok and that he didn’t need help. I just stood watching just to make sure he was ok but he kept waving me off as if he didn’t need assistance.

The whole situation was just odd as he was able to park into the spot within a minute of getting back into his van. I was trying to figure out if it was a scam and had a theory. One theory was that perhaps he damaged the company van or hit another vehicle and wanted to pin it on someone else by taking photos or video of a stranger operating his vehicle. What would you do in this situation? What other scam operation could this have been?
